Bogart Gehl - Illustrations - July 1st - August 31st

I did not find art, it found me. Currently a student in Sheridan College's Bachelor of llustration program, my time is divided between my studies, painting and occasionally writing. I do not find my myself falling into one specific genre or topic of interest as my mind is always open to new thoughts and ideas therefore my work is in the process of constant evolution.

My current works are inspired by eighteenth century Japanese wood blocks prints Ukiyoe. Though these are paintings and not engravings, they feature many prominent figures of Eastern mythology as well characters from Japanese pop culture. Illustrated on found pieces of wood, a suggestive background that typically suits the subject is washed in with thin acrylic paint before the subject itself is painted on, usually in an impasto manner (incredibly thick layers of paint to emphasis depth and importance).
