“To mark the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth, Tony Britten directs this docu-drama narrated by John Hurt, which charts the young composer's formative years at Gresham's School in Norfolk, which sowed the seeds of the pacifism that became a defining influence on his work. As the thirties beckon, Britten (Alex Lawther) is encouraged by the school's inspirational head of history to address social and political issues, and vent their fury about the horrors of the First World War. Britten crosses paths with Donald Maclean (Christopher Theobald), who would later attain notoriety as one of the Cambridge spies, and the young man forges close friendships with Oliver Berthoud (Mykola Allen), Peter Floud (Bradley Hall) and David Layton (Jeremy Lloyd), whose names are recorded in Britten's diaries from the period.”- Camden Review
