Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon

“Shep Gordon may be the most famous Hollywood guy no one has ever heard of. In the late '60s he hung out with Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix and got into show business by managing Alice Cooper. A few decades later Gordon was dating Sharon Stone, producing films and transforming gourmet chefs into household names.
“Gordon lived a hedonistic sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle for a long time, then decided he'd had enough. A likable-seeming guy with a modest air and an infectious laugh, Gordon went from the ultimate Hollywood insider to stepping far outside that bubble. In Supermensch, he sets forth his candid take on fame. "There's nothing about fame that I've ever seen that's healthy," says Gordon. "It has no intrinsic value in itself." But before he gets to the vicissitudes of celebrity culture, he tells amazing stories about his crazy days on the road with Cooper, masterminding the rocker's outrageous stunts as well as his part in the careers of Groucho Marx, Teddy Pendergrass, Anne Murray and Emeril Lagasse. Friends like Michael Douglas, Willie Nelson and Sylvester Stallone sing his praises.
“The documentary is the directorial debut of comedian Mike Myers, who met Gordon in the early 1990s when working on Wayne's World. He became fascinated by Gordon, whom he clearly admires. Myers' sense of humor is interspersed throughout the engaging film, which consists of a host of wild stories, as well as vivid archival footage, talking heads and cleverly made re-enactments.
“The portrait of the man behind the young artists draws the viewer in from the lively opening frames. The film is clearly made with affection, and that goodwill is infectious. This look at a promotional visionary is funny, captivating and energetic.”- Claudia Puig, USA Today
