Rome, Open City

This was Roberto Rossellini’s revelation, a harrowing drama about the Nazi occupation of Rome and the brave few who struggled against it. Rome, Open City is a shockingly authentic experience, conceived and directed amid the ruin of World War II, with immediacy in every frame. Marking a watershed moment in Italian cinema, this galvanic work garnered awards around the globe and left the beginnings of a new film movement in its wake.

“The most precious moment of film history.” - Martin Scorsese

Janus Films is please to announce a re-release of Roberto Rossellini’s Rome, Open City in a new, 4K restoration undertaken last year. This restoration far surpasses any previous versions of the film. Now, in addition to the landmark of neo-realism that it is, it’s also a visually ravishing film, full of amazing cinematography and detail that is breathtaking to behold. We couldn’t be happier to bring this film to theaters again.
