The University of Waterloo and The Congress of Black Women are thrilled to present BLACK@WATERLOO: BLACK FILM FESTIVAL, a celebration of storytelling for and by Black creatives.

The festival showcases the diversity and creativity of Black filmmaking, from both political and musical documentaries to the telling of real Black Canadian narratives.

Propelled by the pulsing beats of Toronto's early hip hop scene, Brother is the story of Francis and Michael, sons of Caribbean immigrants maturing into young men. Exploring themes of masculinity, identity and family, a mystery unfolds during the sweltering summer of 1991, and escalating tensions set off a series of events that change the course of the brothers' lives forever.

Two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing, and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished.

Carmen is a charming story, inspired by true events, set in a village in Malta. Carmen has looked after her brother, the priest at the local church, since she was sixteen years old. Now almost fifty, she is suddenly left to start a new life. Facing her past, Carmen brings colour to the lives of the villagers in this compelling story about a woman finding her voice.

Dewayne Johnson, a Bay Area groundskeeper, suffered from rashes in 2014 and wondered if they were caused by the herbicide he'd been using for the past couple years. As his health deteriorated, Johnson became the face of a David-and-Goliath legal battle to hold a multi-national agrochemical corporation accountable for a product with allegedly misleading labelling.

"Many years ago, Steven Truscott and Lynne Harper were classmates in the small town of Clinton, Ont. Her body was discovered on June 11. The next day, Steven Truscott — believed to be the last person to have seen Lynne Harper alive — was arrested for her murder; Truscott was eventually found guilty and sentenced to die by hanging. He was 14 years old.
