Midnight Special

"A beautifully strange and stirring sci-fi adventure about a boy with special powers, was written and directed by Jeff Nichols, a storyteller with special powers of his own." - Wall Street Journal

“Midnight Special is an engaging, beautifully filmed throwback to the early films of Steven Spielberg and the novels of Stephen King. In Texas, devoted dad Roy Tomlin (Michael Shannon) and his friend Lucas (Joel Edgerton) have grabbed Roy’s eight-year-old son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher). He has telekinetic powers which manifest as bright lights shooting from his eyes so a whole army of people want custody of him, including the FBI and a Texas cult who regard Alton as their saviour.

“Roy merely wants to protect his son as they head towards an unmissable rendezvous that carries strong echoes of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. The thrill of the chase, the brooding atmosphere and the complexity of the many conspiracy theories ensure that Midnight Special is never dull.

“Adam Driver brings a touch of Jeff Goldblum’s eccentricity to the role of NSA analyst Paul Sevier and the reliable Shannon is completely believable as a father who will do anything to save his son. Midnight Special is a film with many virtues even if it leaves you scratching your head at all the questions it simply refuses to answer. 5/5” - Daily Express
