The Good Liar

“Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren are out to seduce you — and to have great fun pretending to be seduced by each other in Bill Condon’s wonderfully weird thriller. Initially, the mood is all flirtation and classy high jinks. Roy Courtnay (McKellen), is a rapscallion, based in central London, who scams naive businessmen with such Kingsman-style panache that it seems likely he was once a secret agent. He also likes to fleece wealthy widows.

“Thanks to an online dating service he meets Betty (Mirren). The latter is adorably wide-eyed, yet because we’re familiar with the tropes of this genre we suspect that Roy has met his match. And that the pair, after trying to double-and triple-cross each other, will wind up fighting on the same side.

“McKellen is 80. Mirren is 74. They both have a ball with a script that constantly challenges stereotypes concerning the ‘old’ — especially the idea that they’re more interested in companionship than sex. The Good Liar offers an antidote to prejudice of all kinds, via sights and sounds best described as rainbow-hued.” - London Evening Standard
