This week we open MAIDEN, an exhilarating, suspenseful, and emotionally charged documentary that chronicles the unprecedented journey of a 24-year-old charter-boat cook, who became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the 'Whitbread Round the World' sailing race in 1989. Also on screen starting Friday is Ari Aster's (Hereditary) new Swedish-set psychological horror, MIDSOMMAR. If you missed the music doc, ECHO IN THE CANYON, you have another chance to see it this week. We begin our EXHIBITION ON SCREEN series [2] with Van Gogh and Japan, which takes the viewer on an informed and delightful tour of the exhibit from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. You can see the superb acting veterans, Blythe Danner and John Lithgow, in the late-life romance, THE TOMORROW MAN. Cat fanciers will love the NEW YORK CAT FILM FESTIVAL; fans of our $5 weekday matinees will be pleased to know we are screening AVENGERS: ENDGAME; and music lovers will dig DECONSTRUCTING THE BEATLES: ABBEY ROAD, SIDE 2 (I've seen this entire series, and I think this one is my favourite. Superb.)
Finally, if you haven't heard, the Playhouse is now fully licensed: this means you can enjoy an "adult" beverage with your movie, if you so choose. We are serving a selection of craft beer and cider, plus Ontario wine.
