Oscar films continue this week with the opening of Les Misérables, nominated for Best International Feature this year! This isn't the musical, but has a lot of similar themes... an intense and explosive film set in modern-day Paris. Also opening this weekend, the brand new Werner Herzog documentary, Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin. You know no one does documentaries like Herzog, and the late travel-writer's fascinating life is worthy of the Herzog treatment.
We've got limited screenings for two new movies this week. The Song of Names, starring Tim Roth & Clive Owen, is based on the novel by Norman Lebrecht and directed by François Girard, of The Red Violin fame. Also at the Original, we have one show only for the new documentary, Midnight Family on the 29th... "an enthralling and disquieting glimpse of healthcare in modern Mexico." Check out the trailer [2] and you'll want to check out the movie, too!
This weekend at the Twin we are offering bonus screenings of A Hidden Life, Terrance Malick's masterpiece based on the true story of Franz Jägerstätter. To quote Variety, it's "cinema at its mightiest and holiest. A Hidden Life is a movie you enter, like a cathedral of the senses." Winner of the Ecumenical Prize at Cannes 2019, A Hidden Life is a profoundly moving experience and a must-see on the big screen.
We're celebrating Winterloo [3] this weekend at the Princess with two FREE screenings (Saturday & Sunday) of the family film, Abominable. Arrive early! Film starts at 4:30!
Starting next week we begin our EXCLUSIVE run of the entire 2020 Oscar Shorts program. Live Action, Animated, and Documentary Shorts: the Original Princess will have them all, so if you want an edge on the Oscar pool (and if you enjoy truly excellent filmmaking), don't miss any of them!
