Paul Thomas Anderson: ‘Inherent Vice is like a sweet, dripping aching for the past’
Beginning this Saturday, area cinephiles will have three chances to see Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE in 35mm. Take note! April 30, May 1 & 4 only.

For most, this will be their first opportunity to see in 35mm PTA's 2014 film adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel. Anderson shot the film in 35mm, and this is the way he intended for it to be seen.
There is a strong case to be made suggesting that seeing INHERENT VICE in 35mm will be a revelation.
First, consider what Elizabeth Weitzman of the New York Daily News wrote:
"Somehow, Paul Thomas Anderson and Joaquin Phoenix, have managed the impossible. They’ve turned Thomas Pynchon’s work into a slapstick noir homage that doesn’t just reward but demands multiple viewings ... Phoenix’s extraordinary performance pulls the movie’s infinite strands together. But this twisty tale takes so many foggy turns that you’ll want to approach it with a plan..."
There's no denying that Inherent Vice did leave some viewers foggy on its initial release, so we reiterate Weitzman's remark that it rewards and demands multiple viewings.
But we'll go a step further than that, and suggest that watching INHERENT VICE in 35mm will reward the viewer with a much richer experience. Indeed, we believe the experience should reveal secrets within the film that otherwise are hidden from those who encounter the text digitally.
Films wash over us. When we go to a movie, we are abandoning ourselves and deep-diving into the experience. That's why going to a cinema to see a film will always be more special than watching at home. But watching a film in 35mm is a step beyond... it's a deeper dive into an alpha-state. The persistence of vision our brain creates to see the illusion of continuous movement is the closest we get to dreaming without being asleep. It's magic.

Back to reality: Almost all of the films we present in 35mm are coming from the USA. It costs a lot to ship these heavy film reels back and forth across the border! Will you ever get a chance to see INHERENT VICE in 35mm again? Not likely. Should you make plans (change plans!) to see it with us this week? Definitely!
