This week we open MAIDEN, an exhilarating, suspenseful, and emotionally charged documentary that chronicles the unprecedented journey of a 24-year-old charter-boat cook, who became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the 'Whitbread Round the World' sailing race in 1989. Also on screen starting Friday is Ari Aster's (Hereditary) new Swedish-set psychological horror, MIDSOMMAR. If you missed the music doc, ECHO IN THE CANYON, you have another chance to see it this week. We begin our EXHIBITION ON SCREEN series with Van Gogh and Japan, which takes the viewer on an informed and delightful tour of the exhibit from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. You can see the superb acting veterans, Blythe Danner and John Lithgow, in the late-life romance, THE TOMORROW MAN. Cat fanciers will love the NEW YORK CAT FILM FESTIVAL; fans of our $5 weekday matinees will be pleased to know we are screening AVENGERS: ENDGAME; and music lovers will dig DECONSTRUCTING THE BEATLES: ABBEY ROAD, SIDE 2 (I've seen this entire series, and I think this one is my favourite. Superb.)

Finally, if you haven't heard, the Playhouse is now fully licensed: this means you can enjoy an "adult" beverage with your movie, if you so choose. We are serving a selection of craft beer and cider, plus Ontario wine.

“A sort of seafaring Battle of the Sexes, Maiden is an enlivening bit of documentary filmmaking about an all-female sailing crew that takes on harsh oceanic conditions and even rougher treatment from the sexist international sailing community.

"The deliciously entertaining Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling take center stage in a comedy about women in a male-dominated world. Laugh-until-you-cry and witheringly funny, often even keenly skewering." - Rolling Stone

A heartfelt, hilarious look at late night TV.

Writer and producer Mindy Kaling is at the top of her game in this timely send up to women in the entertainment industry.

"Another groundbreaker in horror from Hereditary's Ari Aster who mixes a modern breakup story with pagan rituals in Sweden. If you're looking for the scariest movie ever shot in blinding sunlight, the raw and riveting Midsommar is it." - Rolling Stone

“In the land of the Hårga people, the sun never sets. That makes it a strange spot for a person seeking rest, but for Dani (Florence Pugh), the heroine of Ari Aster’s Midsommar, there aren’t many other options.

"A richly evocative and entertainingly anecdotal overview of the 1960s Laurel Canyon music scene."- Variety

“Tightly framing the Los Angeles music scene with a focus on the mid-'60s emergence of folk rock in the city’s storied Laurel Canyon district, Echo in the Canyon deftly captures the diversity of influences that launched groundbreaking bands like The Byrds, The Mamas & the Papas and Buffalo Springfield to international acclaim.

“‘I envy the Japanese’  Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the exhibition on which this film is based – Van Gogh & Japan at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam – one can see why. Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art.

"If you cherish the rare opportunity to watch magnificent actors as perfect as Blythe Danner and John Lithgow giving it all they’ve got, in a film about grown-ups, then the line starts here." - Rex Reed, The Observer

"It’s never too late to fall in love. The Tomorrow Man is a charming, uplifting film about two small-town senior citizens who manage to do just that, against formidable odds. It’s not a movie for the immature. If you’re a member of the Marvel comics brigade, move along. Nothing for you here.

"Pavarotti's larger-than-life personality shines in almost every scene. The singer's optimism is contagious, and his schoolboy-like wonder is jubilant. There's a lot to smile at here." - New York Times

From the filmmaking team behind the highly-acclaimed documentary THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK — THE TOURING YEARS, this riveting film lifts the curtain on the icon who brought opera to the people. Academy Award winner Ron Howard puts audiences front row center for an exploration of the world’s best-loved tenor.
