Mar 22-28: Laurel & Hardy biopic, The Shining, every NYC street & a Nordic fairytale

We're feeling jazzed about this upcoming week at the Playhouse. We kick off Friday with a run of Stan & Ollie, the new Laurel & Hardy biopic starring two comic geniuses in their own right, Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. Also starting Friday is the new doc The World Before Your Feet, featuring Matt Green, a modern pilgrim who embarked on walking every street in New York. Giving up his home and belongings, he's been at this trek for 6 years (and he and the film's director have recorded a special intro just for our Playhouse patrons!) Also, we're super-thrilled to have Anita Joldersma on hand for a few of the screenings to talk briefly about her 4 years walking every street in Hamilton. She says she's OCD but we just think she's determined! Don't miss the Oscar-nominated Scandinavian feature, Border, which plays for only 3 shows; it is out of the ordinary and unforgettable. On Wed. Mar 27, there will be a special (brief!) presentation before The Shining: Andrew Hunter will introduce Kubrick’s horror classic by illuminating the intriguing presence of Canadian art, including four prominent paintings by Alex Colville, throughout the film. We can't wait to learn more about that revelation! Finally, celebrate the end of winter by Finding Hygge with us. Co-presented by The Pale Blue Dot. For all you Buster Keaton fans out there (we know there are lots) don't miss The Great Buster, a new documentary about one of the greatest of them all. For almost 30 years annually we have been presenting the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity (aka 'World's Best Commercials'). These have been a perennial favourite with our audiences, and we're thrilled to bring the 2018 edition to the Playhouse!

From the screenwriter of Philomena. "The strength of the performances is matched by the sweetness of this tribute to the great comedy duo Laurel & Hardy, brought unerringly to life by Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. An ode to friendship, Stan & Ollie is something no one who has ever laughed at the pair should miss. Directed by Jon S.

Presented by Myles Travel. Win a trip to NYC!

There are 8,000 miles of roads and paths in New York City and for the past six years Matt Green has been walking them all - every street, park, cemetery, beach, and bridge. “In the age of sponsored content, book deals, and reality TV, it seems almost unfathomable that someone would shoulder a massive, gimmicky undertaking for…nothing.

"Mads Mikkelsen's virtuoso performance as a downed pilot trying to survive in the harshest of environments is the warm heart of this ice-cold killer of a movie." - Rolling Stone  “It’s eyeball-freezing cold up there in the Arctic. You can feel it in this movie’s bones.

Oscar-Nominated: Best Make-Up. “A Swedish customs officer with a special talent for detecting contraband must ultimately choose between good and evil in the idiosyncratic thriller Border, an exciting, intelligent mix of romance, Nordic noir, social realism, and supernatural horror that defies and subverts genre conventions.

"It's a relaxed study of greatness, of exquisite physical comedy, of how'd-he-do-that stuntwork, of a vigorous cinema artist who saw new and enduring possibilities for his medium." - LA Times

“‘Hygge — pronounced ‘HOO-geh’ — is one of those indefinable terms couched in a specific culture, in this case Danish, that actually has universal meaning.
