Join us October 15 and 16 with presenting partner Environment Hamilton for special presentations of the new 2020 environmental doc I Am Greta. The film follows young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg from her intial single-handed demonstrations outside the Swedish Parliament, to a sail-powered journey across the Atlantic to speak at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019. An inspiring person who's words must be heard!

Both screenings will feature an Environment Hamilton representative to speak to climate action before the film.

Meeting The Beatles in India returns again this weekend. In case you missed it last week, the film includes never-before-seen footage of the Beatles, plus stories and more from their 1968 trip to meet and study transcendental meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Plus, an unlikely Canadian connection in the form of photographer Paul Saltzman, who photographed the band's history-changing trip.

A note to our valued patrons, The Playhouse will be closed temporarily on October 18 - 22 for a motion picture production. The Playhouse cinema is an elegant and beautiful 106 year old theatre. No expense was spared when this theatre was built in 1914, and following the cinema's 2018 restoration it has taken the attention of local film productions. We can't say much more about what will be happening behind the closed doors of the cinema next week, but it is something big! The Playhouse will return to normal operation Friday, October 23rd. Until then stay safe and we look forward to seeing you at the movies!

Two words: Bon Scott. Required viewing for any self-respecting rock fan! 1979 concert film

“AC/DC is known for their working-class sensibility that music should be raucous, enjoyable, and made often. Concerns about originality are at best secondary and academic. This ethic particularly defines the Bon Scott Years—1974-1979, before the band wrote movie soundtracks, made music videos, and became ubiquitous over commercial airwaves.

“First-rate. Sacks’ insights into his own psychological journey, which includes a poignant late life romance after decades of celibacy, are wonderfully perceptive, but equally invaluable are those of his colleagues — a brilliant assemblage of artists and scientists who love him dearly. ”

“In 2001, 27-year-old writer-director Richard Kelly created a pop classic of American suburban paranoia in Donnie Darko. This film made Tears for Fears hip (kind of) and had a tremendous discovery in the young Jake Gyllenhaal, playing Donnie, a high-school kid on medication for the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia.
