When the news hit last week about the imminent closure of the Original Princess, the community outcry was overwhelming. We were told the story hit a record in reader interest at the Record, and that the community "really wants the (Original) Princess to stay." We do, too! Our landlords sat up and took notice when the public shared with them their outrage over their plans: they apologized for misinforming us about a signed lease with a VR firm. The Original is not saved yet: the eviction notice remains and we still have to negotiate a new lease with the Huether Hotel. We hope we can reach an agreement that is fair on all sides, but it is not done yet. We will keep you posted. Thanks, everyone, for showing your support for us. So far, it has made a difference.

In the meantime, great movies continue. Premiering at the Original is the "lost" Aretha Franklin documentary, Amazing Grace: "Watching it is a transcendent, spine-tingling, uplifting, utterly joyous experience." We could use some of that!

Finally, because of the chaos our business was thrown into last week, for the first time in 34 years, there will be no printed Original Film Guide for the month of May. We sincerely hope we will be able to resume the Film Guide in June. We will be showing a diverse mix of films at the Original through May; there just won't be a printed calendar. Keep updated by going to our website regularly (Coming Soon), looking out for these e-blasts (if it's not part of your inbox, make sure you move it there) and following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Thanks again for the support. It means everything to us and, for the sake of arts and culture in the community, Waterloo Region, too.

"Matthias Schoenarts delivers a superb performance in Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre's directorial debut, a beautiful film about redemption and reform. " - Seattle Times

“The Mustang, set in a remote prison compound nestled in the Nevada desert, is a lyrical movie. It’s about the bond between a hardened prisoner and a wild horse, and it’s been made, by the first-time director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, in a style of great-plains minimalism.

“Two sisters from an affluent family re-explore their unusually close bonds in The Quietude, Pablo Trapero’s beautifully crafted multilayered drama. Boasting a trio of actresses at the top of their game and cinematography with confident yet unshowy fluidity, the movie deftly enters into the bosom of a family harbouring multiple secrets, encompassing the personal and political.

“Joyful in all the best ways. It’s completely and utterly beautiful.” -Alex Billington, First Showing

Many of us have fantasized about it; cutting ourselves off from the hustle and bustle of the big city and escaping to a “simpler” life out in the country. But as much as we’d like to get closer to nature, nature is not always the most welcoming host.

"Lord of the Rings allusions are the hook. Fans will enjoy spotting the references, but the real story is about a generation scythed down by war." - CNET

The Lord of the Rings continues to be one of the most-read, most beloved book series of all time, and with good reason. The level of thought and detail imbued in its pages gives it an air of authenticity that can make it easy to forget that someone actually had to make it all up. But what drove the man who devoted his life to the creation of this fictional world?
