FILMS SHOWING Friday Mar 3 to Thursday Mar 9

Who says Germans aren't funny? One of the most buzzed about films at TIFF 2017, Toni Erdmann is wacky, audacious and... what's the German word for "not-to-be-missed"? It earned itself an Oscar-nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, as did Land of Mine, a Danish WWII drama also opening the Original this weekend. Attention must be paid: they were beat out by Iran's The Salesman (now playing --and ending soon-- at the Original).

If I have your attention and you want to enter a draw for passes to see Anna Kendrick's new wedding comedy, Table 19, keep scrolling! It opens the Twin this Friday.

"Hugely entertaining... One big adult paean to that old adolescent screen staple, from the unlikely bonding to the way-'80s music to the wacky tobacky scene. And we're still suckers for it." - Boston Globe

Weddings can be great parties with good friends, unlimited champagne, and free dispensation to dance to all the cheesy singalongs you'd never hear at the club. But they can also be swirling nightmare whirlpools of social awkwardness, obligation, and unhealthy competition.

No screenings currently scheduled.

PG

"Lion celebrates the human will and the human need to find meaning and connection in life." - Philadelphia Inquirer

A five-year-old Indian boy, Saroo, goes with his older brother, Guddu, to beg for money at a train station. When Saroo gets separated from his brother, he climbs on a train to search for him and winds up many miles away from his home.

"Funny, tender, outrageous - this unpredictable movie belongs in a category all its own." - Newsday

“Toni Erdmann is a tough film to explain. It aims to confound, to discombobulate, to make you laugh and wonder what exactly you think is so amusing—to re-evaluate things, in short. That’s the goal of both the film and the title character, a parody persona adopted by an eccentric divorced dad to both repel, and earn the love of, his disapproving daughter.

No screenings currently scheduled.

14A

"Zandvliet has crafted a handsome, affecting and questioning film about post-war revenge and forgiveness. On a tough field to navigate, he makes it to the other side, commendably." - Globe & Mail

Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. “Written and directed by Martin Zandvliet, Land of Mine takes place just after World War II. And a key part of its plot involves not hardened combat veterans but young teenage boys, kids really, some no older than 15.

No screenings currently scheduled.

14A

"An extraordinary swirl of love, anger, tenderness and brittle humour." - Variety

“Like a carefully wrought piece of origami, Manchester by the Sea unfolds slowly and delicately to reveal its inner workings, building over time into one of the most powerful emotional experiences filmgoers will have this year.

No screenings currently scheduled.

14A

"A film of rare grace - a tender, compassionate, restrained look at a life lived in the shadows." - Detroit News

Winner of 3 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor & Best Adapted Screenplay.  "If you think art should challenge us, then you will embrace writer-director Barry Jenkins' exquisitely crafted drama Moonlight.

No screenings currently scheduled.

PG

"Featuring footage from the last six decades, 'All Governments Lie' is a timely, convincing documentary that will cause audiences to question what they see and read." - Los Angeles Times

“Canadian documentary All Governments Lie lucidly argues that powerful interests have been creating supercharged fake stories for decades to advance their own nefarious interests. And the institutional media have too often blithely played along.

No screenings currently scheduled.
