New health measures at the Playhouse, plus other news

playhouse_restrictions_newsletter.png

Effective Dec 19, the province has required all cinemas in Ontario to enact new health measures. For the foreseeable future:

  • our capacity will be reduced to 50%
  • food and beverages cannot be consumed on the premises

We thank you in advance for adhering to these measures: you cannot bring your own snacks.

  • Please be reminded that you must wear your masks at all times, including while sitting in the cinema auditorium
  • Vaccine passports and photo ID continue to be required

Although we are disappointed by these new restrictions, it is understandable. We are relieved that we can stay open (for now). We believe these new measures will make the cinema extremely safe, and we encourage you to see our exclusive holiday film --NIGHTMARE ALLEY-- while you can (just in case more restrictions are coming).

Traditionally, the post-Christmas / pre-Oscar season is the busiest time at arthouse cinemas like the Playhouse and is very important to the business. Last year it was lost, and it looks like this year may be a repeat. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst! The cinema industry has been hard hit.

Independent cinema is more than entertainment, it's community.

While we are allowed to be open showing movies, we cannot sell you snacks to take into the theatre; however, we CAN sell you snacks to TAKE HOME. We are reviving POPCORN PICK-UP at the Playhouse, and our snackbar will be open daily FOR TAKE-OUT ONLY during cinema hours (check our daily schedule.) We have lots of cinema merch on offer, which make great gifts and stocking stuffers!

For those who like to get out of the house over the holidays, please note that the Playhouse will be closed Dec 24 & 25. We will be back open on Boxing Day. Holiday showtimes will be posted tomorrow. Look for our showtimes newsletter in your email inboxes Wednesday morning.

Now playing at the Playhouse, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro's NIGHTMARE ALLEY is a noir thriller with an all-star cast (shot in Hamilton and Toronto!) "What I love about del Toro's Nightmare Alley is that it feels like his love letter to a bygone era in Hollywood, as well as a gorgeously haunting cautionary tale as old as time with incredible performances from both Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett." - Salon.com

Ever bound for ragged glory, Rheostatics occupy a unique place in the Canadian music landscape, pulled together and apart for nearly forty years. Finding grace in the reality of endurance, Rheostatics show us a special type of longevity, through upheaval, personal (and personnel) change, and a basic refusal to play the game in any way, shape or form, stretched over decades.
