FILMS SHOWING Friday Dec 16 to Thursday Dec 22

New at the Twin this week is NOCTURNAL ANIMALS, a stylish thriller-within-a-thriller about love, betrayal and revenge, written and directed by Tom Ford ('A Single Man') and starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. A mesmerizing film with an opening scene that --we promise-- you won't soon forget! Also new is Mel Gibson's "come-back" film, praised by critics and audiences alike, HACKSAW RIDGE.

We're excited about our exclusive premiere of the Swedish smash-hit, A MAN CALLED OVE. The book it's based upon is an international best-seller, and as promised, we have 5 copies to give away to the people who correctly guessed that the name of the dog in the trailer is "Prince." The list of randomly selected winners can be found at the bottom of this newsletter!

Speaking of winners, we're getting into awards season. The Golden Globe nominees were announced a few days ago, and MOONLIGHT nabbed 6 nominations, including Best Picture & Best Director. It also was named Best Picture of 2016 by the Toronto Film Critics. As expected, Joel Edgerton & Ruth Negga received Golden Globe nominations for their outstanding performances in LOVING.

Don't miss our annual Food Bank Benefit screening: IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, Tues. Dec. 20 at 6:30. Free admission with a donation to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. Many thanks to our presenting sponsor, The Beat Goes On!

"There are few movies that speak to the American moment as movingly — and with as much idealism — as Jeff Nichols’s Loving." New York Times

Oscar-Nominated: Best Actress. "Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga) aren’t much different from other married couples struggling to get by in rural Virginia in the 1950s. About the only unusual thing about their relationship, considering the time and place, is that Mildred is black and Richard is white.

"Rebecca Hall gives one of the great performances of the year as the title character in Christine, an intense, stomach-churning, unblinking drama." - Chicago Sun-Times

“In dramatizing real-life tragedies, the line between exploitation and empathetic storytelling is a hairline crack. Antonio Campos’ Christine—which tells the story of events leading up to the moment in 1974 when Christine Chubbuck, a 29-year-old Sarasota, Fla., TV news reporter, committed suicide while on the air—is just on the correct side of that crack

"'The Eagle Huntress' is all at once an inspiring story for children of all ages to believe that they can do anything, a reflection of the unfairness of gender roles and a rare and unique look at a remote part of the world." - New York Daily News

"It seems impossible to conceive of training wild eagles, with their seven-foot wingspans and razor-sharp talons, yet the Kazakh people of Mongolia have been doing so for centuries. For 13-year-old Aisholpan Nurgaiv, participating in this sacred practice means being the first female in twelve generations of her family to become an eagle hunter.
