FILMS SHOWING Friday Feb 3 to Thursday Feb 9

This weekend at the Original, we open two new films that we'll dub "poetic" and "profane." NERUDA is Pablo Larrain's biopic of the famous Chilean poet and, like his other biopic (JACKIE), it breaches conventions of the genre to get to the heart of its subject. As for "profane," film and literature students are going to obsess over THE LOVE WITCH, as will anyone who had a taste for those lurid TV horrors from the 1970s. It too toys with conventions of its own genre to give a feminist take on horror tropes. We love the glam Hammer horror aesthetic. If you'd like to take a stab at a pair of passes for 'The Love Witch,' keep scrolling.

Next week, we're excited to present (once again!) the incredible HARRY MANX. This show is going to sell out. If you haven't got your ticket yet, hurry! If you haven't seen Harry yet, what are you waiting for?

"Is Neruda a cinematic play, a poem, a biopic? In this near-perfect homage to a literary giant, it's all open to interpretation." - Globe & Mail

"For anyone who believes that poetry and democracy spring from the same source and provoke the same enemies, this movie provides both encouragement and warning." - New York Times

"To watch Portman's every move is to not only watch history being recreated, but to also witness history being made." 4/4 stars - Globe & Mail

NOMINATED FOR 3 OSCARS, INCL. BEST ACTRESS. "She stares into the tiny mirror of the Air Force One bathroom, adjusting her pink pillbox hat and equally pink, double-breasted knockoff Chanel suit – a vision of carefully calculated grace, and a template for all First Ladies to follow. It is Nov.

"Watching it is like getting a front-row seat to the beautifully mounted revival of a classic work of American drama." - Slate

"A simply glorious Annette Bening leads a stellar cast in Mike Mills' semiautobiographical story about a bohemian woman raising a teen in the age of 1970s feminism and punk rock. Note to the Academy, make sure that Best Actress nomination happens." - Rolling Stone

Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay. “Daringly freeform, writer-director Mike Mills’s wise, domestic comedy is first and foremost an attitude: Southern California, loose-limbed, Converse-clad and easing down the road on a skateboard.

PG

"There are few movies that speak to the American moment as movingly — and with as much idealism — as Jeff Nichols’s Loving." New York Times

Oscar-Nominated: Best Actress. "Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga) aren’t much different from other married couples struggling to get by in rural Virginia in the 1950s. About the only unusual thing about their relationship, considering the time and place, is that Mildred is black and Richard is white.

STC

She's back! "A modern feminist horror tale that rewards deep exploration beneath its admittedly beautiful surface. What looks like it might be simply a pure exercise in style not only invites multiple viewings, it requires them." - Detroit News

“Writer-director-producer Anna Biller’s The Love Witch is a brightly hued homage to Technicolor horror movies, but with a twist. Women in such movies were often little more than eye candy to be discarded — quickly, vividly and violently. Biller subverts the genre’s gender roles, focusing on a powerful but lonely female villain.

Harry Manx has spent years fusing eastern musical traditions with the blues, switching effortlessly between conventional guitars, harmonica, and banjo and the decidedly different Mohan veena, a 20-stringed instrument invented by Manx’ Indian mentor Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Manx is often referred to as the “Mysticssippi” Blues Man, because of his expertise in melding both East and West music together and therefore, “creating musical short stories that wed the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas”.
